About Us

Rockland Cemetery is a 200 acre gem, distinguished by its careful preservation and stunning views. While 20% of the grounds have been thoughtfully developed to accommodate families, the remaining 80% remains a pristine, wooded sanctuary overlooking the Hudson River. This natural balance ensures that, despite its charm and historical significance, the cemetery is a refuge for all.

Founded by Eleazar Lord in 1847, Rockland Cemetery reflects the vision of a distinguished author and educator who significantly impacted the Hudson Valley's economy as the founding president of the Erie Railroad. Dr. Lord envisioned a cemetery of such grandeur and natural beauty that it would become the premier final resting place for the New York City metropolitan area. To realize this vision, he brought his railroad and its passengers to the small town of Piermont. Almost overnight, the town transformed into a bustling rail and water hub, connecting Rockland County to New York City.

Today, Rockland Cemetery operates as a non-profit and non-sectarian organization. Additionally, the costs for eternal repose are reasonably priced. Lot prices are determined by the board of trustees, with varying rates based on location, offering a range of options. Burial charges are fixed by the New York State Cemetery Board.
